We’re building a detached garage with a loft and thought the project would have a consistent foreman on-site. Instead, it’s been a rotating crew with different leads showing up. Some days no one’s there until 11am, other days we see trades working without supervision. It’s made it hard to track progress or even know who to ask about issues. Is this normal in construction, or should there always be a dedicated supervisor? I’d love to know how others made sure accountability stayed consistent.

In the realm of construction projects, ensuring that designs are practical and executable is paramount. A Constructability Review serves as a critical assessment during the planning phase, evaluating whether the proposed designs can be built efficiently and effectively. This process involves a thorough examination of construction plans, identifying potential obstacles, and suggesting improvements to enhance buildability. By addressing these issues early, teams can minimize delays, reduce costs, and improve overall project outcomes. Incorporating such reviews into the project lifecycle fosters better communication among stakeholders and contributes to the successful delivery of construction projects.

It’s not uncommon in small to mid-size construction projects like a detached garage with a loft to see rotating crews, but there should still be clear supervision and communication. A dedicated site supervisor or project manager doesn’t always stay on-site full time, but there should be one person responsible for coordination, updates, and accountability. You have every right to ask your contractor who that main point of contact is. To keep things on track, request weekly check-ins or updates and document any concerns in writing. This helps create accountability even if the crew changes from day to day.
