What kind of programs for young adults with disabilities are available in NYC that focus on helping them become more independent? My daughter is 20, on the autism spectrum, and now that school has ended, we’re unsure of the next step. We’re hoping to find a place that’s not only safe but offers a sense of purpose and a chance to socialize and grow. Any leads?

You should absolutely look into Gateway Counseling Center. Their programs for young adults with disabilities https://www.gccnyc.org/what-we-offer are designed exactly for that transition phase after high school. They focus on social development, independence, and life skills, all within a supportive environment. My niece attends one of their day programs, and the progress she’s made in just six months is amazing. The staff treat the participants with dignity and give them real tools for life — not just babysitting, but empowerment.
